How to Apply for a PRTD: A Simple Guide to Forms and Documents
A useful way to prepare a Permanent Resident Travel Document application is to ask: "What does each document prove?"
Our suggested approach is to organize the application around identity, permanent resident status, travel history and the reason you qualify. A clear explanation is more helpful than a large collection of documents with no connection between them.
Start with the current application instructions
You must be outside Canada to apply for a PRTD. The online application is submitted through IRCC's Permanent Residence Portal. You complete the digital IMM 5444 form and follow the IMM 5644 document checklist. Paper applications are available in certain circumstances, including when an accommodation is needed.
Avoid relying on an old downloaded form or a checklist shared in a social-media group. Open the current official instructions when preparing your application.
Gather your passport and immigration records
For PRTD applications, the checklist requires copies of all pages of the passports or travel documents used during the previous five years, including your current valid passport or travel document. Submit the required copies at the application stage, not original passports. Follow any later passport-submission request separately.
Keep your available PR records nearby so that names, dates and immigration details can be checked consistently.
Show how you meet the residency obligation
IRCC's guide calls for at least two pieces of supporting evidence. Examples include employment records, pay statements, bank statements, tax assessment notices and rental agreements. Choose relevant records covering the period being assessed.
Do not assume that two documents, whatever they contain, automatically prove your case. For your own review, ask what dates each record covers and whether it supports what you have written.
Explain your absences accurately
The form asks for your absences during the previous five years, or since becoming a permanent resident if that was more recent. It also includes questions about qualifying overseas circumstances and humanitarian considerations.
Match the dates across your form, explanation and evidence. Where a record is unavailable, explain the gap rather than guessing or creating a replacement document.
Check family and translation requirements
Each family member who needs a PRTD needs a separate, complete application, including children. Additional requirements may apply to a minor's travel or to the country from which you apply. Documents in another language must meet IRCC's English or French translation requirements, including applicable certification or affidavit requirements.
Pay the correct fee and keep a copy
As of September 16, 2026, the government PRTD application fee is CAD $50 per person. Confirm the current amount before paying and include the payment receipt. Budget separately for any services you choose to use, such as translation or professional assistance.
Before submitting, open every uploaded file to check that it is readable and complete. Save the submitted application and monitor the contact details you gave IRCC for further requests.
