Need to Return to Canada Urgently? PRTD Timing and Travel Explained

Your job, family or another important responsibility may require you to return to Canada quickly. When you are abroad without a valid PR card, the first question is often: "How soon can I get a PRTD?"

The responsible answer is that you should not rely on a promised number of days.

Is there a guaranteed processing time?

IRCC says PRTD processing times vary. Completeness, verification and requests for further information can affect an application. Its urgent-processing guidance also says that it does not currently publish PRTD processing times, although these applications receive priority.

A friend's quick approval is not a reliable timetable for your application.

When can you request urgent processing?

IRCC's current instructions address urgent PRTD requests when you are outside Canada and travelling back within the next five days, with an eligible reason. Examples include serious illness, a family member's serious illness or death, certain work needs, a lost or stolen PR card during temporary travel, or a crisis. Other reasons may be accepted by an officer.

Provide travel details, proof of payment for the trip, an explanation of the urgency and evidence supporting the reason. This might be a medical document or an employer's letter. Follow the portal's urgent-request instructions and provide translations where required.

Urgent processing does not guarantee approval or that the document will arrive before your flight. Do not delay an ordinary application just to fall within the urgent window.

Approval is not the final travel step

After approval, IRCC sends instructions for submitting your passport or travel document. It is then returned with the PRTD. An approval email is not a replacement for the issued travel document.

Our practical suggestion is to leave room for passport handling and delivery when planning your return. Keep your employer or family informed that the date may change.

Check the document before you travel

Review your name, passport details, expiry date and number of permitted entries. Raise any apparent error before travelling.

A PRTD is usually for one entry. Multiple-entry documents can be issued in appropriate cases, but they are not automatic. Do not assume you can use the same document for another trip.

What about travelling through a land border?

Different document rules apply when you approach Canada in a private vehicle rather than on a commercial carrier. This is not a way to erase a residency problem. Your PR status and residency obligations still matter, and any travel through another country needs its own planning. Get case-specific advice before changing your route.

Plan beyond this return trip

After returning, arrange any required PR card renewal or replacement before your next international trip. A PRTD does not automatically renew your PR card.

Our recommendation is to keep a secure copy of your travel documents and check them before booking future travel, not only before departure.
